There are approximately 5 million Masons worldwide, including 2 million in the United States. The Grand Lodge of California has nearly 63,671 members and about 400 lodges throughout the state.

In China, about 300 B.C., Mencius wrote "A master Mason, in teaching his apprentices, makes use of the compasses and the square. Ye who are engaged in the pursuit of Wisdom, must also make use of the compasses and the square." Additionally, in a book called Great Learning, 500 B.C., we find that "A man should abstain from doing unto others what he would not they should do unto him; and this is called the principle of acting on the square."

In 1952, eighty-nine percent of the U.S. Supreme Court Justices were Freemasons.

In Hammer vs. State, 173 Indiana, 199 (1909) The Supreme Court of Indiana upheld a statute which made it a criminal offense to wear the emblem of any society or organization of which one is not a member. The court based its decision on the fact that membership in such societies is the result of fitness and selection and that the wearing of such emblems by non-members is a deceit and false pretense.

Temecula Catalina Island Lodge No. 524 tracks member lead sources

Local lodges are building their own Web sites (often with the help of the Grand Lodge of California’s Web server) with two primary focuses: make information available to interested men who are drawn to the fraternity and provide an information resource for existing members who make a habit us using the Web to stay connected with lodge events.

Web-savvy members of Temecula Catalina Lodge No. 524 (particularly Brother Eric Steineman) designed a dynamic and graphically-driven Web site that has become the primary source for meeting prospective members. The site is filled with information about membership, the craft, Masonic links, the lodge calendar, recent events, officers, etc.

The 1820s looked as though they would be the best of times for the special relationship between the fraternal order of Freemasonry and the young American nation. It wasn't just because so many prominent members of the founding generation--George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, and indeed 13 of the 39 signers of the Constitution--had been members. It was also because the rapidly growing republic and the fraternal society still held so many ideals in common. American republican values looked like Masonic values writ large: honorable civic-mindedness, a high regard for learning and progress, and what might be called a broad and tolerant religiosity. Indeed, says Steven Bullock, a historian at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a leading scholar of the Masonic fraternity in America, Freemasons "helped to give the new nation a symbolic core."
